macOS

Two things decide whether FlowMic can type on a Mac: where the app sits before you open it the first time, and one permission. Do them in this order.

1. Download the notarized macOS archive (Apple silicon) and unzip it. You get a single app called FlowMic.
2. Drag FlowMic into your Applications folder — before you open it for the first time. This step is not optional; the reason is below.
3. Open FlowMic from Applications. The first launch asks for the interface language.
4. macOS asks for Accessibility. Allow it — without it, words cannot enter other apps.
5. Keep the computer unlocked while you use it. Words cannot enter the lock screen or a password field.

That permission lives here: System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Accessibility. If FlowMic is already open when it is refused, it offers to take you straight to that page.

Why the app has to move before its first launch

If you open it where it was downloaded, macOS does not run that copy at all. It runs a throwaway copy from a read-only location that is different every single time you launch it. The Accessibility switch you turn on never reaches the copy that is running — so you can see FlowMic switched on in System Settings and it still will not type, and restarting does not help. Moving the app into Applications is what fixes it.

Without Accessibility, the phone can speak and the Mac can receive the words, but they will not enter the focused box. Turn the permission on in System Settings.

Moving to a new version

FlowMic notices new versions and tells you about them, but on a Mac it does not install them for you — it opens the download page and you replace the app yourself.

1. Quit FlowMic.
2. Download and unzip the new archive, then drag the new FlowMic into Applications, replacing the one already there.
3. Open it again. Your settings and paired phones are still there, and Accessibility normally stays on — if macOS does ask again, switch it on in the same place.
